Admissions Guide

Entrance Exam Briefings, Posters, and Demos
There will be an entrance exam briefing of the graduate school of information science and technology. No registration needed. We welcome prospective students.

It is followed by briefings, demos, and posters by our Department of Information and Communication Engineering. You can enter and leave their rooms and move among them freely.

  • Demo Exhibitions and Consulting by Current Students
    • Where: Meeting Room 1, on the 3rd floor of Faculty of Engineering Building 2
    • An interactive demo session and consulting (both by professors and current students), until around 16:30

Komaba Research Campus Open House and NII Open House
Several research groups of Department of Information and Communication Engineering are affiliated to Institute of Industrial Science (IIS; Komaba Research Campus) or National Institute of Informatics (NII; Hitotsubashi Campus); Both have their open houses; you can visit them and see their exhibitions. Also, Komaba Research Campus Open House will host an entrance exam briefing session of the department (the content is the same as the one at Hongo campus (*)).

  • Entrance Exam Briefing in Komaba Research Campus Open House:
    • When:June 3rd (Sat), 2017. 15:45-17:45
    • Where: Ew-501/502 in the 5th floor of building E, Institute of Industrial Science.

Summer Entrance Exam for School Year 2018 Starting April
Application Period: June 22nd (Thu) to June 28th (Wed), 2017
Exam Date: August 21st (Mon) to 28th (Mon), 2017

  • Candidates:
    Master's Program for international and domestic students
    Doctoral Program for international and domestic students
  • Expected Number of Students:
    28 for Master's Program and 12 for the Doctoral Program. Students will be accepted from a wide range, including working students.
  • Exams:
    English (TOEFL), mathematics (three problems in the following three fields: (1) linear algebra;  (2) analysis (differential/integral calculus, ordinary differential equations, etc.); and (3) probability/statistics.), specialized subjects (three out of five problems selected from the following fields: electrical and electronic circuits, computer architecture, logic circuits, algorithms and data structures, telecommunications, computer networks, signal processing and information theory), and oral exam.

Winter Entrance Exam for School Year 2018 Starting April:
Application Period to : December 11th (Mon) to 13th (Wed), 2017
Exam Date: January 30th (Tue) and 31st (Wed), 2018

  • Candidates:
    Master's Program for international and domestic students
    Doctoral Program for international and domestic students
  • Expected Number of Students:
    The number of accepted students will be determined after summer exam.
    Students will be accepted from a wide range, including working students.
  • Exams:

The guides can be acquired in person at the Graduate School Team Office in the Educational Affairs Group, located on the 1st Floor of Faculty of Engineering Building 8 on the Hongo Campus. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Please send your request for the guide to the following address. Be sure to indicate the department (Department of Information and Communication Engineering), as well as the course ("Masters", "Doctoral", or "Doctoral for Working Graduates") you apply to. Enclose a self-addressed return envelope (A4-size). If the return address is in Japan, affix 400yen in stamps to it. If the address is outside of Japan, enclose necessary amount of IRCs. IRC, International Reply Coupons, can be purchased at post offices worldwide. Enclose the following number of IRCs depending on the recipient's address; Asia 7, Oceania/North America/Middle America/Middle East: 10, Europe: 12, South America/Africa 14.

Important Notice Regarding TOEFL

The Graduate School of Information Science and Technology evaluates English abilities using official TOEFL score reports submitted by candidates. Our entrance exams, therefore, do not include foreign language testing.

Obtaining your TOEFL score may take a significant amount of time due to the large volume of TOEFL applications. You are recommended to take a TOEFL test as early as possible.
